He added: “Acid reflux can be attributed to an imbalance in pitta dosha. Pitta dosha is associated with the elements fire and water and governs metabolism, digestion and transformation in the body. When pitta dosha becomes aggravated or imbalanced, it can lead to excess heat, acidity, and inflammation in the digestive system, all of which can contribute to acid reflux.”

Ayurvedic diet for acid reflux relief

Dr Geethi Varma also shared with HT Lifestyle some dietary principles and recommendations to consider for digestive disorders.

1. General Guidelines:

  • Eat your meals in a calm, relaxed environment, chewing your food well.
  • Avoid overeating and eating too fast, as it can put extra pressure on the digestive system.
  • Establish a regular eating routine with fixed meal times.
  • Eating excessively spicy and fatty foods can lead to acid reflux
  • Skipping meals can lead to acid reflux
  • Avoid eating heavy meals late at night.

2. Diet Recommendations:

  • Choose a mostly plant-based diet with fresh, whole foods.
  • Choose cooked and hot foods over raw and cold foods, as they are easier to digest.
  • Include a variety of grains such as basmati rice, quinoa and barley.
  • Consume a moderate amount of healthy fats such as ghee (clarified butter), coconut oil and olive oil.
  • Include easily digestible proteins such as mung beans, lentils and tofu.
  • Cook with digestive spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger and fenugreek.
  • Limit or avoid spicy, fried, and processed foods, as they can aggravate acid reflux symptoms.
  • Milk can be a great option for those who are not lactose intolerant
  • Minimize your intake of caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks and acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.
  • Stay hydrated by consuming warm water throughout the day, but avoid drinking large amounts of water when you’re hungry

3. Herbal Remedies:

  • Aloe Vera Juice: Drink a small amount of pure aloe vera juice before meals to soothe the digestive tract.
  • Licorice tea: Sip licorice tea, as it can help reduce inflammation in the esophagus.
  • Chamomile: Enjoy a cup of chamomile, known for its calming and soothing properties.

4. Food Habits And Lifestyle:

  • Avoid lying down immediately after meals. Wait at least two to three hours before lying down or going to bed.
  • Practice stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises.
  • Engage in regular physical activity to support healthy digestion.
  • Consider incorporating Ayurvedic practices such as self-massage (abhyanga) and gentle yoga postures that aid in digestion.
